Mother’s Day Lunch @ Betty’s Midwest Kitchen

At first my sis and I planed to bring our mom to a French dining, slow course meal paired fine wine. My mom has never experience French cuisine, and I thought this Mother’s Day might be a good occasion to try out something new. But my idea was blown away by a reality check, SOPHIA. Yeah, this little rascal will not be quiet or sit properly over meal. More ever if it’s a proper dining place. I’m sure a screaming and running toddler will be a nuisance in any fine dining restaurant.

Next my sis came across Betty’s Midwest Kitchen. American dining that serves almost all pork! After reading a few blogs review about their good service, great food and reasonable pricing (a plus point!), we decided to check it out! My sis tried to make resrvation on Mother’s Day, but they don’t take reservations on Sat/Sun and Public Holiday. Okay, fine. We plan to reach there at 11.30am when Betty’s Midwest Kitchen starts their business operation. IMG_6220Henry joined us too in this Mother’s Day, and he arrived early at the restaurant. Betty’s Midwest Kitchen is only a short drive from my mom’s house, and we left the house about 11.20am. My sis asked if Henry could get us a table first as we were on our way there. Pssst … there was already patrons waiting outside for the restaurant to open! That’s crazy! We thought we are the early birds that beat the crowds, and we are not that early anyways!

At 11.30am, Henry called. No seating allowed until full party arrive.
“We are almost there!” …
Henry told us that they were very strict and rejected his request to get us a table. WTF?!

At 11.35am … We reached the restaurant. By now it’s only 5 minutes from the restaurant start of business hours. How LATE can we be?!

I found a parking easily on a weekend of a quiet shop lots area in Aman Suria. My sis jumped off the car immediately before I straighten the car, and try to convince the boss (we presume he is Betty’s husband) that the full party is here and give us a table. While my mom and I off load diaper bag and removing Sophia from her car seat. When we meet my sis, she was already fuming!

Henry was seated at a corner of small table for 3. We have 4 adults and a baby. There was a bigger table next to it. But the boss refused to let Henry sit there saying your party is not here yet! My sis told him we are ALL HERE. Just parking the car and removing the baby.

Boss: Are you sure they are all HERE?

Sis: Yes.

Boss: You SURE?!!!!!! SURE????

Sis: YESSSSS!!! Duh? They are just outside, COMING IN NOW!
*How sure can I reassure YOU?!! WTF!!!*

Boss: Hmmph! Okay if you are SURE?!!

IMG_6219IMG_6221 IMG_6214 This was already a bad first impression of the so-called GOOD SERVICE as reviewed by other blogs. Well, we are not dumb that we can’t be sure if our family is not here if they are outside the restaurant!

It’s a very small restaurant, hardly fit 10 tables. You can imagine how cramp this place could be when it’s filled up. The restaurant has simple tables and chairs, the wall decorated with pictures of either PIGS or States in the the mid west part of United States of America. By the time we got seated, there were only 2 tables left. A small table that Henry was seated in the beginning and another table for 4. Our table was next to the busy serving walk way, not ideal for a baby in tow. The boss came to us and warn us not to let Sophia runs around and get in the way of the waiters serving.

We quickly look through the menu, and wanted to order a few variety dishes to share and get to taste more of what’s on the menu. To our disappointment, they do not have a few dishes that we liked. What a bummer!

Said the waiter, “ We do not have Macaroni & Cheese, Pork Chop with Orange Cream and Beer Batter Fish today”.

Oh well, since we ordered all pork from the menu, we tried their Mother Day’s Special on the board - Chicken. And also their ham mushroom & barley soup.

IMG_6215IMG_6227Ham Mushroom & Barley Soup
I was expecting a creamy soup, but it turn out to be clear soup broth. Although I’m not a fan of clear soup, this was pretty good and very flavourful. I had a few spoonfuls and it’s enough for me. The four of us shared this cup of soup, only drank half a cup.

IMG_6255BMK’s Roast Chicken
Chicken thigh was very soft and juicy. But not our favourite. The meat was so soft that a fork will be enough to tear the meat.
Gravy taste like BBQ sauce, only lighter and more diluted. Not the crowd favourite among all other dishes we tried.

IMG_6257 Baby Back Ribs
Nicely grilled to succulent tenderness, they live up to their menu description! Lovely crispy skin on the outside, and soft juicy tender meat inside! Spread some BBQ sauce on the ribs, you’ll be drooling for more! My mom likes the ribs very much, enjoying to the last bits!

IMG_6245 Pork Chop with Apples
A new twist to pork chop! My first time trying fruit with pork :) Although I would also like to try their pork chop with orange cream, but it was not available that day. The apples gravy taste very much similar to Mc Donald’s apple pie sauce! Imagine the apple pie sauce on top of pork chop ~ Voila! The pork chop is tougher, but still very tender. Oh, the mash potato with gravy was superb! Very buttery creamy :)

IMG_6248Grilled Beer Braised Boston Butt
The best of the mains we ordered! Very softly braised meat, all you need is to lightly use your fork to eat it! There’s no need for knife to cut it. Really juicy and well marinated. Excellent combi with mash potato!

IMG_6249Dog Food
The may sound ugly or perhaps funny to some extend … They served this fries drenched in gravy, top with cheese in a bowl like dog food!
I think they use the same gravy throughout all the meals, or more or less it taste the same gravy to me. This fries is nonetheless yummy … dog food? ;)

Finished off the mains, here are some of our drinks ordered :)IMG_6222Their house lemonade was ok, the price was cheap at RM2.50! Definitely a thirst quencher on a hot day and to cool down after a fuming episode with the seating arrangement earlier! If you’re up for some alcohol, try the Savanna Dry Cider too!

Overall, the food made up for the poor customer service we received. The price for all these yummy meals only adds up to total bill RM170+. Very reasonable for the serving, and you’ll be guarantee a full belly before leaving this restaurant.

We wanted to try their desserts, but better NOT this time. Sophia hasn’t been sitting still on her high chair, and keep running towards the serving walkway (the boss has given me several raised eye brows) where I have to pull her away each time. It’s a very small cramp restaurant. Sophia has not been in her best behaviour and little rascal been going from table to table to play peek-a-boo with other patrons … Sigh! She may think it’s funny, but the boss thinks she is a nuisance!
