How to spot FAKE ERGO?

I’m one of the victim of purchasing a fake Ergo Baby Carrier from mummysg forum. The woman who sold me this Galaxy Ergo told me she received it as her baby shower gift and since she won’t be using it, she was selling it off. The price I paid was only $50 cheaper than authorised retail shop. Which made me felt even more fooled and regretted for not buying from the store.

Anyways, after using it for about 6 months the Galaxy Ergo finally shows signs of wear and tear. After asking around from other mummies who are using Ergo, I suspected mine to be a fake goods. I do not want to compromise my child’s safety, in case the buckle snaps off while my child is in it! Baby wearing shouldn’t give me fear. So I started looking for other brands to compare with ERGO. On my top list of favourite soft structured carriers (SSC), I like the Maduca, Ergo and Boba.

After comparing all the features and prices, I finally decided to buy another ERGO. Although the Galaxy Ergo that I had was fake, I like the features very much. And I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the Ergo Organic material! It’s very soft and comfortable!

So here on my blog, I would like to share with you what to look out for in a FAKE vs REAL Ergo Baby Carrier.

p/s: Please note that these two Ergo carriers are not of the same model, but it’s from the same range – Original version. The comparison should be very similar.

IMG_0987 IMG_0988The logo patch is very similar at a glance. But if you look closely, you’ll see the bad stitches on the logo badge (grey) compared to the original (green).
Note: The Ergo Organic logo has a extra “feather” design with the word organic.

IMG_0989IMG_0990Check out the area gap stitches (marked with red star) on the real Ergo (green) vs the fake Ergo (grey).
The width of the waist band on fake Ergo is narrower too.

IMG_0993IMG_0994Check if there’s a label – Made in China or Made in India (for Ergo Organic) and serial number.
The fake Ergo does not has the label. This label is found on the inside hood pocket in front.

IMG_0995 IMG_0996 The zipper pocket for storage is bigger and wider compared to the fake Ergo.

IMG_0999IMG_0997IMG_0998 IMG_1000 Both has the WARNING – FALL HAZARD label.
Again you may note that the fake ERGO label sewing is not as neat the real below.

IMG_1005 IMG_1006The waist buckle is the MOST worrying part of getting a FAKE Ergo as this may concern the safety of your baby when wearing!
The real Ergo buckle should have “STEALTH” engraved in between the middle gap of the T shape buckle. The fake (bottom pic) is smooth and without the additional safety T locking system.

IMG_1018There’s serial code engraved on the real Ergo waist closing snap. Fake Ergo has non.

IMG_1017 IMG_1019 The elastic band that secure the buckle on the REAL Ergo are wider and curved to on the side. The FAKE Ergo elastic band are thinner and straight.

IMG_1014IMG_1013The shoulder straps buckle are made similar to the real ones. Real Ergo buckle has the extra W lock.

IMG_1026IMG_1025Even the zipper logo are hard to distinguish between real and fake.

But with all the above features to look out for in checking for an authentic Ergo baby carrier, I hope you’ll have better luck when buying from third party or pre-loved Ergo Carriers to avoid fake ones! Best is to buy directly from authorised reseller.

  1. I work for the company that represents Ergo here in malaysia. You spotted all the differences and this is a great post. Ergo are aware of this problem and taking steps to make the original more obvious. However in. the been time Ergo carriers should come with a warranty card that you can register on their site.
